ReclaMet is an up-scaling project funded by EIT Raw Materials. This project aims for enriching the zinc content in the HIsarna flue dust to the level which makes it suitable for use in Zn smelters as secondary raw materials. The project is led by Tata Steel R&D in IJmuiden, Netherlands, with partnership of TU Delft, CRM, and Nyrstar.
The HIsarna process is a new and ground-breaking smelting reduction process to produce liquid hot metal from iron ores and coal. The main driver to develop this process is the need for an ironmaking process with a significantly reduced carbon footprint and was an outcome of the large EU framework project called ULCOS. The very little raw materials pre-processing required by HIsarna is a key advantage of the process, which reduces energy consumption and CO2-emissions.
We recruited one PhD’s and two Postdoc’s to work fulltime on this project together with the industrial partners. We took special care in selecting candidates that would be able to work closely as a team and with their diverse background would be able to help in each separate project. A great team has been formed with pro-active spirit and friendship.
